Kappa Delta Pi honors English chair

Nicole Martone needs a bigger trophy case.

Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education) recently presented Martone — now in her second year as English Department chair — with its Master Teacher of Honor Award.

This is the 14th teaching award, which includes grants, that was presented to Martone, who was feted by the Board of Education during its Oct. 10 meeting.

Principal Dan Donovan said Martone is “constantly trying to improve as a leader and teacher … This award is quite an honor and Mrs. Martone is very deserving.”

The award  recognizes educators with a master’s degree and 15 years of teaching experience. In addition the organization states that the teachers “have demonstrated commitment to continuous professional growth and exemplary integrity in their classroom, research, service, and leadership.” Only 16 other educators have won this award since its inception 2011.

English Department Chair Nicole Martone stands with Principal Dan Donovan, left, and BOE chair Patrick Johnston. The board honored Martone Oct. 10 for receiving Kappa Delta Pi’s Master Teacher of Honor Award.

This is Martone’s 18th year in education and her second year at DHS. She currently teaches AP Literature and Composition to juniors and seniors for two periods a day, and performs her department head duties the remainder of the day.

Martone said by applying for the award she hoped to encourage fellow staff members to get involved with the organization, in which she is an active member. In 2012 she received its Teacher of Honor Award.

“I wanted other educators to know about the organization as well as the good things that are happening in our school,” she said.

It was Martone’s teachers who inspired her to become an educator in the first place. “There were teachers who really left an impression on me and I wanted to do the same for others,” she said. “Teachers spend seven hours a day with students and are a huge part of their lives. They help shape our students for the future.  It’s an incredible gift and so rewarding. Educators helped shape me and my interests and it’s an honor to be able to do the same for others. ”

Martone is a doctoral candidate  in educational leadership at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. She plans to graduate this spring.

¨Any pocket of free time I have now goes to writing my dissertation,” she said. “Right now, I’m envisioning days when I can enjoy more of the pastimes that I’ve had to set aside to pursue this degree.” She loves the outdoors, so this means hiking, bicycling, and traveling.

Martone said she went for the department job here because she found herself drawn to leadership roles. “I found myself in informal teacher leader roles, where I was helping others and working to find solutions for department and schoolwide needs. I then sought to do this work full-time.”

Ann Tucci, chair of the Social Studies Department, said she admires Martone´s work ethic. ¨I have witnessed on multiple occasions Nicole’s attention to detail and her thoughtful preparation for her department work.¨

English teacher Elise Tobin admires the way Martone leads the English Department. ¨She  is dedicated to improving her own knowledge base so that she can pass that on to her students as well as the English Department. In addition to being driven to master her content and craft, she also strives to create a positive work environment by consistently celebrating the successes, both personal and professional, of the department members.¨

Overall, Martone’s favorite part about being a teacher is “supporting students with career and college readiness, and helping them to realize their full potential as productive and fulfilled citizens.”

Bieber takes 3rd in prestigious local juried art show

Encouraged by her art teacher, sophomore Lindsey Bieber kind of on a whim entered a juried art show this fall and walked out with a third-place showing and a $1,000 cash prize.

Earlier this month, the 40th Annual Juried Art Show opened at the Richter Association for the Arts. Showcasing diverse art from the greater Connecticut area, Richter named numerous award winners — from “Best in Show” to “Best Watercolor.”

Although the work of many experienced artists were on display and in competition, adolescents in Connecticut were also represented. Bieber was one of those teen representatives, winning third place in the “Student” category. She won alongside Summer Vibes, done by second-place winner Lorennah Granfors, and first place-winner Label Love, by Alexa Tannenbaum.

“I entered the art show through school when Mrs. [Kymberly] Noone asked us to submit some work to Richter,” Bieber said. “The application process was really simple. I just filled out a form with a description of my work.”

Noone, Bieber’s Studio Art II Honors teacher, was supportive of her work, describing it as “innovative” and “incredibly detailed.”

Bieber was inspired by her grandfather, who was born in the same year as the title 1931. Rather than paint, she used clay to depict a Coca-Cola bottle and a baseball on a picnic blanket. She used a solid-colored background to draw attention to the intricate object textures from the clay.

Her process in creating the piece was a method she had just recently discovered. “I used my hands and a toothpick to thinly layer it onto a sheet of cardboard,” Bieber said. The styling, overall, paid off; her piece stood out to the judges.

After submitting her application, it took hardly any time for Bieber to be informed of her third-place ranking. Going into the event, she was aware of her placement for the student work section, having received an email from Richter. Despite this, it was still difficult for her to believe that she had actually won, stating, “I was up against some really talented people, both in and out of DHS.”

Her disbelief, however, was not shared among her peers. Brianna Kaltchesnee, sophomore and a friend of Bieber’s, knew from the beginning that the work was a winner. “She’s always been really good at art. I honestly wasn’t surprised that she won,” Kaltchesnee said.

Bieber’s passion for the arts was exuded throughout the day of the awards ceremony. She noted the ingenuity of other artist renditions, and was excited at the prospect of a similar appreciation for art.

When speaking about her future, Bieber aspires to “continue doing art recreationally,” and plans on applying “those fine-motor skills” she has acquired through art to enter the medical occupational field. Presently, however, she is simply excited to have placed well.

Bieber’s still life 1931 will continue to be exhibited through October at the Richter Association for the Arts’ Home.

Updated 11/7/18: Administration announced at about 2:30 p.m. that the C wing elevator was back in service.

Dear Hatter Families,

For reasons beyond our control the two main elevators, C and D, have been taken out of service.  The City of Danbury Public Works has been notified and is currently working on a solution.  In the meantime, any student who needs to use the elevator should be dropped off in the front of Danbury High School and will report to the media center.  From there we will make every attempt to provide the students with the materials missed in class.  We understand this is a major disruption to the education of the students and are working with the city to rectify the issues.
We will notify you as soon as the elevators are functioning again.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Review: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ hits a high note

Review: 5 Stars

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” which opened over the weekend at Loews AMC Danbury 16, captures the soul and charisma that Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was known for.

The actor Rami Malek, perhaps best known as the star of USA Network’s “Mr. Robot,” executes the lively Freddie Mercury impressively and does not hesitate to dive deep into the character.

From the performances, to the outfits and the hit songs, “Bohemian Rhapsody” takes the audience back in time to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The movie is largely centered on Mercury’s growth of fame as a young man and how fame can change a person. The title of the movie, of course, comes from the iconic group’s long-play hit of the same name.

Although this movie is a must-see, something that I did not favor in the movie was how Mercury was portrayed at times. Mercury was seen as though the bad guy for parts of the movie, when in reality was just lost in the wrong crowd and idea of life. The ending had a bittersweet moment that shed a tear to the audience’s eye, and left the audience to reminisce of the good old days. The music made you want to get up and dance, and as an individual who was not born in that era, it made me wish to be born back in the 70’s and 80’s. Overall, this movie is a MUST watch and had an incredible message and history.

The movie, rated PG-13, has a run time of just over two hours.

Flex program is work in progress

Students and teachers are slowly adjusting to the new flex program inserted into the middle of each day as the administration continues to try to resolve issues.

The idea of flex at DHS originated two years ago when Principal Dan Donovan visited a teaching conference in Cromwell, N.H. Its main purpose at Cromwell was for students to have individual instruction during the school day to help them improve their academic performance.

Donovan, in an interview with the Hatters’ Herald staff, said that “having a slot [flex] during the day helps students balance life and work,” and for those who may “participate in after-school activities such as marching band, sports, and theater.”

Donovan took that idea of flex and scheduled it in the middle of the school’s new block schedule. Even so, some students have said it would have made more sense to schedule it during the skinny block, at the end of the day.

“Flex was placed in the middle of the day to allow seniors to continue leaving school early,” Donovan said. “We had the possibility to get students out of school earlier, so we took it.”

Flex classes have started out small to encourage individual assistance, which better helps students. Teachers can raise their own class cap, but Donovan believes smaller groups lead to a better learning environment.

The administration and the teachers’ union agreed to cap flex for core classes at 15 for maximum attention between teacher and student. Despite the agreement, the cap now stands at 17 in the core classes, up to 30 or more for programs and electives such as P.E., art, and culinary. Donovan said he is trying to get the cap back down to 15.

In addition to such electives, Donovan said program teachers have begun offering enrichment courses such as the new film class, “Great Films of the 20th Century,” which is currently being held on Thursday and Friday. Theater teacher Michael Burnett offers a meditation flex, and a chess flex is also held by Jameson Parker.

Enrichment opportunities are one of Donovan’s top priorities when it comes to flex. “Meditation on Fridays has proven very popular and as the year goes on we hope to introduce more possibilities for students to extend their learning,” Donovan said. “Once more enrichment opportunities are open, the class numbers should start to disperse and it should be easier to get into the flex classes you want.”

On Monday, students meet with their flex mentor to discuss where to schedule them for the week. If a student has a 75 or lower in any class, they are to be scheduled for flex help.

If they have straight A’s, they can request a study hall, or a class where they need to work on a project or make-up work, or an enrichment opportunity.

Donovan commented on the flex scheduling stating “since we are still figuring the system out, students are not able to schedule themselves. The teachers and administration will need to be able to trust the students to schedule themselves by where they need to be, rather than by where they want to be.”

There is an app that students can use to schedule themselves, but before Donovan allows that to occur, he needs to see whether the students can handle the responsibility.

So far, some teachers are happy with the way flex is rolling out, such as math teacher Todd Harris.

“Flex and advisory are night and day. Advisory was a mess; flex is great,” Harris said.

Due to how early it still is in the school year, teachers are not yet able to see a significant change within their students’ grades with flex. However, teachers such as Spanish teacher and volleyball coach Aryn Storrs “find[s] it helpful being able to meet with [her] students on a more personal level during the school day” because “when [she is] at practice [she] can’t help them.”

New Social Studies teacher Robert Christie says that the new schedule was “a little chaotic” at first.

Nevertheless, having flex this school year is “a great opportunity. Being a new teacher and being able to plan after school with fewer kids coming to see me is super helpful,” Christie said.

On the other hand, Social Studies teacher Michelle Passarelli, who is also a representative of the teachers’ union, said teachers have been voicing concerns that flex in actuality is another class for them to prepare and teach. By contract, core teachers are not to have more five classes.

“Some teachers feel it is additional work; they feel they are required to do individualized instruction with some students,” Passarelli said.

The administration, however, argues flex doesn’t require a teacher to prepare or teach.

Besides that, she said flex is beneficial to the students in that it allows them to get extra help and make up work if they’ve been out of school. Also, by helping students during the school day, teachers no longer have to stay after school as much to meet with students.

As for the students, there has been a bounty of positive reviews regarding flex, as many believe it is much better than advisory.

In past years, advisory took place between third and fourth period. It was a time meant for teachers to act as mentors for students and teach lessons about reducing stress, stopping bullies, and understanding graduation requirements. Students took part in interactive games and activities.

In spite of advisory’s positive goals, students had many complaints.

“I feel that advisory was just a waste of time. I viewed advisory mainly as a free period,” said sophomore Kendall Damato. “We would talk in advisory about grade management but then never acted on it.”

Junior Jenny Moran shared similar critiques about advisory. “For the majority of the period, everyone just slept, sat around on their phones, or did nothing.”

Senior Kiley Madore viewed advisory as inefficient. “I felt like there were times when I really had to do homework or kind of wanted to treat it as a study hall; however, my teacher would always make sure we did the lesson plan that they gave teachers even though they used the same ones each year.”

Donovan said he recognized that it is a challenge for many students that pursue extracurricular activities to complete their schoolwork. Flex helps students balance extracurriculars and everyday life with school work.

“I find flex very helpful because I am an athlete,” said varsity field hockey player Avery Marquis. A driven student, Avery schedules her flex with the teachers she needs to visit to stay on top of her schoolwork and have more time for athletics.

Flex allows students to manage their grades, even if they don’t do extracurriculars. Iyanna Torres, a sophomore, said flex is a more productive use of time than advisory.

“We were not able to leave our [advisory] classrooms because we always had something planned, but now I’m able to see my teachers for extra help,” said Torres, who is taking advantage of this extra time, and so has sophomore Vidhi Rana, who has noticed an unmistakable improvement in her grades.

“I had a 70 in English but I went to my teachers during flex for extra help and handed in some things and it brought my grade up to an 80,” Rana said. Although, as with everything, there is always room for improvement.

“Flex would be better if students could schedule their classes for themselves, so long as their grades are sufficient enough,” said BOG Secretary and Senior Gabby D’Ostilio.

Another complaint came from sophomore Isabella Peralta: “When we schedule our flex and decide we need to go see a different teacher, we should be able to change it regardless of what day it is.”

Complaints about students not being able to schedule themselves and the fast rate of flex class spots filling up seem to be the general complaints. Even Donovan agrees that flex still needs some work and concludes “that in order to move forward, we have to get it right.”

DHS adapts to the block schedule

It has been two months since the start of the new school year and there are mixed reactions from students and teachers about block scheduling, including the skinny block, lunch waves, and new absence policy that comes with it.

After the state’s requirement of the class of 2023 increased from 21 credits to 25 credits, the administration needed to alter the school’s schedule so that incoming freshman could obtain the credits they need. As a result, Principal Dan Donovan initiated block scheduling to the entire school.

“[Block scheduling] had to be done,” Donovan said. “Keeping [students] here until five o’clock was not what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to add a ninth period.”

In previous years, only the Freshman Academy followed a block schedule. The following grades worked in eight 45 minute periods, one of them being their lunch period.

The new schedule consists of two 83-minute blocks followed by a 40-minute FLEX period, a 127-minute third block (lunch waves are included in this block), and then a 43-minute “skinny” block. Transition time between classes has been increased to six minutes from five minutes when the school had 8 periods.

During the third block, there are four lunch waves of 30 minutes each. A student or teacher’s lunch wave depends on their location in the building.

Shannon Ahearn
Donovan said that block scheduling has been going well because there are less transitions and 20 percent of teaching time is saved. He also said that blocks are giving teachers more time to work with students.

Matthew Kinsman, an English teacher who is accustomed to blocks since he has taught in the Freshman Academy, said, “I like it because I can get more done, and students stay more focused and less distracted. There are no breaks, which is also good, so I prefer it.”

Emina Mesanovic, a science teacher, said,  “I like block scheduling. I think a positive is that we have more time in class. Last year by the time kids got into class, got their notebooks out, we only had 40 minutes, and then kids started packing up, so we lost a lot of time. I think one nice thing about block scheduling is that it gives us more time in class so we can start an activity when we get into it and then have time to wrap it up.”

Meanwhile, English teacher Juliane Armentano recognized some issues with block scheduling. This is her first year experiencing block scheduling and she had a few opinions to share regarding the transition.

“I think one of the drawbacks is the fact that our lunch period comes part way through period 3,” said Armentano, who is also the teachers’ union building chair. “Students sometimes have a hard time coming back from lunch and re-engaging in the lesson. It has been a challenge for me to try and create lessons that are more interesting for them to hold them engaged.”

Olivia Paris
Ms. Armentano speaks about block scheduling.

Social Studies teacher Michelle Passarelli, who chairs the union’s Advisory to the Principal Committee, said she has received reports from teachers who are having difficulty adjusting.

“A lot of teachers are struggling with teaching all day,” she said. “The block scheduling is an adjustment for both students and teachers.”

Passarelli explained that many teachers are instructing for more than fives hours without a break other than passing time. Under the old 8-period system, teachers had by contract at least one planning period a day. Under the block, teachers now have a planning block every other day, meaning on alternate days they are instructing most of the day without a break.

The new lunch periods have also elicited conflicting opinions. By shortening the span of lunch to 30 minutes, Donovan noticed a decline in disciplinary issues in the cafeteria.

“Kids have five to ten minutes to talk [now],” Donovan said. “Before, we had a lot of discipline issues because you’d get in there and you’d have 25 minutes to run around the courtyard or 25 minutes to sit there doing nothing. Sometimes our freshmen can’t handle that.”

However, some students aren’t happy with the shorter amount of time for lunch. Monica Jefferson, senior, said, “I think the lunch waves are a little too short, especially with the amount of kids that are in the school.”

Jose Campos, junior, added, “Not to mention the fact that we don’t have a lot of time to eat or talk to our friends, which to me is somewhat the point of lunch.”

Teachers have the same wave as their students for lunch. Teachers have encountered students who decide to stay in the classroom instead of going to the cafeteria or media center for their lunch wave. Therefore the teacher is in charge of watching students during their lunch.

“There is no break in between teaching for some teachers,” said Passarelli, adding that the teachers can ask the students to leave but many teachers feel uncomfortable doing that.

Besides the lunch waves, another part of the new schedule includes the “skinny” block during the last period. This block is shorter because core teachers can only teach five classes by contract, and the school does not have enough staff to employ a full block schedule like in the academy.

There are no science classes during the skinny block due to the difficulty of squeezing a lab into just 40 minutes. “I wouldn’t want to have a class during the skinny block,” Mesanovic said.

The feedback concerning this adjustment has not all been positive for teachers that teach during the skinny period. Armentano said, “[The skinny block] comes at the end of the day so I don’t have a breath of fresh air until then, so that’s weird.”

She also states that some of her colleagues have been noticing the same difficulties. She then spoke for students by saying, “Period four is such a challenge because everyone’s brains are fried from long periods and intense studying earlier in the day.”

Kinsman had difficulties with his students during the shortened block as well: “It’s harder to keep them focused in such a short amount of time when they are used to being in class for longer.  I think they take the skinny block less seriously,” he said.

However, some students said they enjoy the skinny block. “I like it because it is easier for me to stay focused throughout the whole block,” senior Andreisy Medina said.

Freshman Michael White added,“I like the skinny block because last year I attended a middle school in New York and we had shorter periods, so I am used to it.”

In addition to the skinny block, there is also a new absence policy that everyone is trying to understand. It is the state’s policy that a student cannot miss 10 percent of a class throughout the year. In block scheduling, one block is the same as two periods, so missing a block is equivalent to missing two periods.

Therefore, you can only have five absences per block class each semester. But Donovan said he and his administrative team can excuse extenuating circumstances such as death in the family or educational trips.

However, there have been complaints from students about this policy.

“I don’t think the new absence policy is appropriate because we can’t control whether we are sick on an A day or a B day,” said senior Madelin Nunez.

Vanessa Garcia, senior, added, “I don’t agree with the new absence policy due to block scheduling. I feel like they should add more days to be absent for each block. Five is not enough.”

Overall, many students are still adapting to block scheduling along with the skinny block, lunchwaves, and the new absence policy.

“It took some time getting used to, but I like it now,” senior Zachary Green said.

Forum speakers warn freshmen of substance dangers

Falling into the path of addiction is hard but it’s also difficult making a full recovery.

Max Dolan, a Danbury resident who is going through the process of a long-term recovery, shared his story of addiction and recovery at the annual Freshman Forum on Oct. 29.

The forum is held every year for freshmen, their parents and guardians to inform them of the dangers of teen substance abuse and services available in the community.

Dolan encouraged teens in the audience to join a community such as the Midwestern Connecticut Council on Alcoholism Inc. to help recover from an addiction. The council, according to its website, is the “primary provider of substance abuse prevention, evaluation and treatment services in the greater Danbury area.”

The forum was sponsored by MCCA and Stand Together Make a Difference, or STMAD, which, according to its website, has as its mission to “promote healthy life choices through a collaborative community effort.”

Every fall the school invites freshmen and their parents to a forum that educates them about substance abuse.

“We want students to know the dangers — not just the immediate dangers, but longterm,” said freshman counselor Jennifer Ondek, one of the event organizers. “We want to educate freshman about the dangers of drugs so that if they are ever put in the situation where a substance is offered, they are educated on what decision to make.”

The forum also provided information on the dangers of vaping — the latest craze to grab a teen’s attention. Different versions of the electronic cigarette devices accommodate not only nicotine but THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.

Lori Miller, safety advocate, described vaping at the high school as “really bad.” Students caught are assigned two days in ISS. If they spend the first day, however, researching the dangers of vaping and writing an essay for Principal Dan Donovan, he will consider reducing the ISS assignment to one day.

“Vaping has gotten to the point here that we really felt that we needed to host this event,” and provide information to students and parents, Ondek said.

Dr. Karen Santucci of Yale University also spoke, informing the audience about a teen’s brain and the fact that it’s still maturing until at least the age of 21. She offered examples of how alcohol affects a teen brain, saying “being under the influence of liquor can cause their bodies to react in alarming ways.”

Danbury Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour explained the state’s laws regarding drug use and possession, and the consequences if a juvenile is caught using or selling.

Students inspired by Stamford education conference

Sophomore Lucy Chen could think of better things to do on a Saturday than attend an educational conference in Stamford.

“I mean, who wants to spend a Saturday at a school?” she said.

But by the end of AMBYESE’s 35th Annual Educational Conference, she and nine other DHS students were happy they spent the day at UConn Stamford with business leaders and educators enriching students in educational and career opportunities.

“Overall, it was definitely worth it,” said Chen, who admitted she feared the day would be “long and boring.”

She added, “I’m now more aware of college and career options. I will definitely be going back next year, and might even apply to the Y.E.S. I Can Program.”

AMBYESE — Annual Multicultural Business Youth Educational Services Embarkment — organizes the conference and its journal to provide resources and connections, such as company links, and college admissions contacts.

“What we’re trying to do is encourage student excellence in their transition into college,” said Abbott Tech’s Jayme Beckham, author of the conference journal and co-organizer of the conference.

Wendell Johnson, co-founder of AMBYESE and its corresponding Y.E.S. I Can program, began the conference, immediately instilling the core message of the conference. “Now is not the time for mediocrity. You are the future leaders of the occupational world.”

Emceed by civil attorney Vanessa Gomez, a lawyer for a Fortune 500 company, the conference encouraged student perseverance to transition out of high school. To provide incentives for students to ask questions, tickets were awarded and pooled at the end for the chance to win gift cards.

Student eagerness was inherently noticeable, especially as they took a growing interest in STEM fields. Knowledge of STEM was asserted throughout the conference, which Johnson describes as “vital to each career” alongside communication.

The AMBYESE Conference provided presentations about college and career choices, offering the skill sets and measures to get there alongside offering new insight and demographics previously unknown to the students.

The keynote presentations were from UConn, IBM, PepsiCo, Praxair (the conference’s sponsor), and Stamford Hospital – the representatives of each company being distinguished honorary program directors of their respected corporations. This offered glimpses of the transition out of high school, along with the fields and achievements of medicine, marketing, engineering, and finance.

The first presentation was on the college admissions process. Kim Bornstein, an admissions officer at UConn Stamford, led this portion. In it, she encouraged the “active participation in the college admissions process” for students, especially seniors.

She described not only the benefits of the UConn program and career fairs, but also detailed what was needed in the admissions process, citing the essay as the most crucial part due to its incorporation of a student voice.

Amy Cordova, sophomore, especially liked this part of the conference, saying “I never knew my own opinions and story mattered so much to colleges.”

Dureseti Chidambarrao, an IBM engineer, explained the purpose of IBM’s engineering on a global-basis, but also mentioned also the inclusivity of his company.

As long as a background in STEM was included, and communication and teamwork was there, anyone could work for IBM.

PepsiCo was the highlight of the educational conference. The Fairfield County marketing and finance team led the iconic company’s presentation. They offered videos starring Chester the Cheetah and Mountain Dew.

They showed off their Frito-Lays and other Pepsi products, and showed just how far the brand’s access reached. Overall, the skills needed for marketing and finance were empathy, innovation, and problem-solving.

Conference sponsor Praxair also presented. It engaged the audience in an interactive matter with a live science demonstration, using the chemicals their company manufactures such as liquid nitrogen and dry ice.

John Sirman initiated the demonstration, and even turned a banana to hold the malleability of a hammer. Overall, students were inspired to further consider engineering and science, as Sirman described multifunctional engineering to require the “ability to learn and adapt” over any educational discipline.

The final presentation from Stamford Hospital described the future of healthcare, and more specifically nursing. Director of Professional Development Mary E. McKiernan appealed to students in describing the demographics of nursing, stating 10 reasons why nursing is a beneficial career to enter. She further asserted the need for understanding and passion over the prestige of competitive medical schools.

At the end of the day, Johnson offered insight into another program offered by AMBYESE — the Y.E.S. I Can Program. To prepare Connecticut adolescents for the educational background needed, AMBYESE offers the Y.E.S. I Can Program as a three-week intensive SAT and college-readiness curriculum, of which is free and even offers weekly career field trips.

Coupled with a well-disciplined teacher staff, the Y.E.S. I Can Program appealed to numerous students throughout the conference who applauded at the presentation’s conclusion. Applications for this program will be open in the spring.

History students organize vigil for Tree of Life victims

Danbury, in a candlelight vigil held downtown on a chilly autumn evening, joined in the national mourning of lives lost in yet another mass shooting — this one at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Oct. 27 that killed 11 and wounded six.

Members of the school’s National Social Studies Honor Society organized the event held at the Danbury commons.

Members of the school’s National Social Studies Honor Society attend a candlelight vigil they organized at the Danbury commons in remembrance of those killed at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in October.

The evening began with a simple moment of silence as residents of the Danbury area gathered to pay their respects to the victims, who at the time of the attack were observing Shabbat services at the Tree of Life synagogue.

It was the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history.

Ann Tucci, NSHSS club adviser, described the people in attendance having their “hearts filled with love.” Many in the crowd used their cell-phone flashlights to symbolize candlelight.

Cantor Penny Kessler of the United Jewish Center spoke to the audience, expressing the pain felt among the Jewish community. (See the center’s statement on the attack here).

Tucci described Kessler’s address as an appeal for “community, love and hope.”

In addition to thanking the Jewish Center and City Center Danbury, Tucci also thanked the mayor’s office and the Danbury Police Department in making the vigil possible.

Danbury makes final touches on construction

Although the $50 million construction project is officially finished, workers are now completing “punch list” fixes such as faulty alarm codes, science tables and a not-so-official Freshman Academy basketball court.

Many problems led to the completed construction of the new Freshman Academy gym.

One of the larger punch list items was to fix was the basketball court, which wasn’t built to official standards for FCIAC games. Foul lines, the keys, all were off.

Athletics Director Chip Salvestrini said the gym, although it can’t be used for official games, will be used as auxiliary for the wrestling team and cheerleading squad.

Salvestrini explained that a communication error between the City of Danbury and architects led to the rebound line being placed two feet closer to the endline than allowed in regulation standards.

Salvestrini added that despite the mistake, the Freshman Academy gym will be an excellent place for “athletes to practice after school on shorter times than the traditional prolonged hours.”

Principal Dan Donovan said the gym can still be used as an “opportunity to expand time management for sports after school” despite the flaw.

In addition to fixing the gym problem, pest control had to be called to deal with cockroaches in the academy. Donovan, however, said the problem has been resolved, and the building is now bug-free and back to sanitary standards.

Currently, however, there is also a leaky roof problem that has yet to be repaired.

Despite the issues, DECO director Sarah Roy, whose office is now in the new building, said, “The new building is beautiful; we needed the space.” She elaborated, explaining that the changes have been productive and helpful as DHS had to accommodate a growing student population.

Although Donovan said he’s content with the construction of the Freshman Academy, labeled the G-building, he supported the building of another high school, or academy, to relieve the pressure of educating 3,200 students in one setting. As city officials like to brag, Danbury is one of the few Connecticut communities to keep growing while others are losing population. Yet, it has only one high school.

Donovan pitched an “academy” tailored to prepare students for certain careers. He said students should have their studies surrounded by a career of their choice acting as the center for academic learning.

Though major construction centered on the academy, the project also included the construction of a black box theater called DHS Performing Arts. In addition to a stage, the building near the auto shop also has classrooms.

Donovan explained that the theater gives the “community a way to connect” as it allows for public meetings and Board of Education conferences. Additionally, DHS teachers have made good use of the performing arts center so far.

“I like the space as a film teacher. It’s an exceptional luxury,” said Scott Carrizzo, an art teacher who teaches film production. Carrizzo, along with Mike Obre, Art Department chair, uses the black box theater to show films during flex, and to showcase student work.

As the overall size of DHS has increased with the new additions, more safety precautions have also been added. Several new features, including fencing across the exterior of DHS leading toward the auto shop and stadium area, have sprung up since the finalization of construction.

Donovan said the new fencing is another “security measure, ensuring school and student safety,” ultimately preventing easy access from the outside.

Another matter, that apparently doesn’t need fixing, is handicapped access to the front of the building. Donovan has received complaints regarding the lack of ramps between the front parking lot and the apron to the school entrance. He points out, however, there is a ramp located central to the apron. Someone in a wheelchair would need to steer toward that ramp to gain access.

The hassle, as Donovan expresses, lies in the “placement of the access point and the curb that causes the inconveniences for people.” However the existing access point still follows federal law for providing access abilities for the handicapped. The unfortunate error was simply made by state plans.

Regardless of any issues, students and staff alike are enjoying the new buildings. Amarryi Edwards, freshman, said, “It’s new, it’s just another building but it feels better.”

Freshman English teacher Melissa Teel said the building provides a new and improved environment for the students and teachers.

“The newer design has motivated students and they are more engaged in class,” Teel said.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that for the first time in my life I had homemade cranberry sauce. Its sweet flavor, delicately balanced with a tangy tartness that made you want to pucker your lips, only slightly, was a welcomed addition to my turkey-laded palate. Oh, little red round fruit of goodness, where have you been all my life?

This of course is a rhetorical question. I know exactly where cranberries have been, or better yet, where they haven’t. My family is from Ecuador and although my family embraces Thanksgiving the way our waistbands embrace our waistlines for a good several days after our annual turkey meal, simply put, cranberries are pretty much non-existent in Ecuadorian cuisine. So much so that it wasn’t until recently that I learned that the Spanish word for cranberry is arándano.

This glaring omission of what is considered by many in the United States a staple in traditional Thanksgiving dinners, brought to light the fact that although I grew up celebrating this tasty holiday, my experience of it was somewhat different from the norm.

For starters, Ecuador does not celebrate Thanksgiving. This may have something to do with the fact that the United States got the pilgrims and Ecuador got the conquistadors. However, Grandma loved to cook. Therefore, if someone somewhere at some point decided to make a day of cooking a national holiday, then who was she to go against the grain? By golly, she would take that grain and boil it down with a dash of salt, some cooking oil, one or two scallion stalks, and a pinch of garlic powder for good measure.

Similarities to traditional Thanksgiving dinners started and ended with the turkey. From there, Grandma’s menu creations took a definite turn to the Latin side of things.

First and foremost came a healthy helping of rice. Growing up in a Hispanic household, rice was served at dinnertime 365 days of the year. It was what made dinner, dinner. Heck, it might have even been dinner itself! Meats? Poultry? Fish? Bah! These were only garnishes to the oh-so-bountiful rice.

Next came Grandma’s signature dish; beef empanadas. This dish consisted of ground beef cooked in a mixture of yumminess, which was tucked gently inside a light and flaky dough. Some people oven-bake these little pockets of love, but Grandma deep-fried them to perfection. Are unclogged arteries really that necessary?

Two other dishes that always made their way into Grandma’s Thanksgiving menu included fried, sweet plantains (maduros in Spanish) and aji, a type of salsa that can be made to varying degrees of spiciness. Grandma always made two batches of aji, a really hot one for those adventurous souls in the family who liked to live life on the edge and a milder one for those who just simply wanted to live.

Grandma made other dishes as well, but these were the ones that we could count on enjoying at Thanksgiving. However, before anyone was allowed to sit down at the table, there was one other thing that we could always count on; Grandma’s mandatory picture of the turkey on the Thanksgiving table. No people required for the shot, just the turkey surrounded by all the dishes that she had prepared for her family with so much love.

It has been more than 15 years since my grandmother passed away and I still think about her often. A few summers ago, I was going through old family photos and I came across one of her famous “Turkey on the Thanksgiving Table” photos. I have no idea as to what year the picture was taken, but that doesn’t matter. Looking at the table setting and seeing everything that Grandma had prepared for us that year brought back many memories of her and of our time together as a family. I smiled, wiped away a tear, and was truly grateful.

DHS Marching Band ends season strong

The DHS Marching Band performed at MetLife Stadium for the USBands Open Class National Championships to conclude its 11 week season.

The band performed their show Invasion, with music arranged by band director Edward P. Adams, visual design by Kevin Bell, and color guard design by color guard captain Tamara Perez and color guard instructor Lauren Richdale.

Kiara Kaltschnee
Hazen Dixon stands outside of MetLife Stadium with the rest of the band for the awards ceremony.

Their show features an alien invasion upon Earth, where humans fight off the aliens and drive them away from the planet in the first movement, and then mourn their dead and destroyed cities in the second movement.

When the aliens return in the third movement, their show is left on an ambiguous note as the aliens and humans begin their final battle.

In their final performance of Invasion, they placed seventh in class 3 open with a score of 87.9875, their highest score all season.

In regards to their final performances, Adams said, “Last competition of last year was New England States. We had an 86.4125, so the final score [this year] was better!”

Drum major and senior Jacob Laham added, “I think our last performance was quite successful; it was our highest score of the whole season, and everyone was highly motivated to put in their best work to give an amazing final performance.”

Many members of the marching band expressed similar sentiments about their last performance and were impressed by the professional stadium they performed in.

Senior flute section leader Erin Smith said, “It was pretty cool, we’ve never been to a stadium that big before, so it was a new experience.”

Kiara Kaltschnee

The week before MetLife, DHS hosted its very first New England Regional Championship and placed second in class 3A with a score of 86.975.

“Regionals was kind of stressful due to the high expectations set by the staff, parents, and USBands organization,” Laham admitted. “However, I think that everyone worked together to support the success of the event. The highlight of that night for me was at the end of the evening when all the band students, parents, and staff came to the cafe to eat together.”

Natalie Preveza, senior trumpet player, agreed that the competition was stressful to run, but said that the highlight of the day for her was “watching UConn perform.”

UConn’s 330 member band traveled to Danbury from Storrs in six coach buses to perform an exhibition after all the competing bands performed at DHS.

“[They] were phenomenal,” Adams said. “Having UConn come and play at your home show is kind of cool, you know, having 40 trumpets to play that well as they stand on your track playing their tunes.”

Following UConn’s performance, graduating seniors from the DHS Marching Band were recognized in a parting ceremony.

After dedicating several years to the program, they reflected on their marching experience.

Senior Christopher Gonzalez, hornline sergeant, attributes marching band as his musical inspiration. “I always get excited whenever we perform our show,” he said. “It’s so cool to see how everyone’s parts tie together to make the show work. I can never help but smile whenever i’m on the field performing.”

With four years of marching and two years as drum major, Laham said, “I’m grateful for the integral role that marching band has played in my high school career. It has taught me valuable lessons, allowed me build many friendships, and has essentially been my home for my four years of high school.”

In reaction to the leaving seniors, junior drumline member Robert Ivancso said, “I’m going to miss them very much. That group has some of the most talented people. I think the marching band is going to be different without the seniors and my marching band experience is going to be different because I’ve grown so close to the senior class.”

Adams had a few words to say about the seniors this year, his first graduating class of students who have had him since day one of band camp their freshman year.

“Every single senior has put a piece of them into this program, to do what was needed,” he said. “It’s sad to see [them] leave on one hand because [they’ve] grown through all that with the marching band program.”

Peter Fernandez
Seniors take photo before New England Regional Championship.

While this season may be coming to an end, there are many other programs for students to pursue during the colder weeks of the year.

Jazz ensembles begin rehearsing this week, and indoor winter marching band programs start the last week of this month, Adams announced.

Like many other members of the marching band, Hazen Dixon, assistant drum major and senior, demonstrated an interest in the programs.

“I’m excited for the winter programs! Especially with the show themes this year, madness and Alice in Wonderland! It especially goes well with how we are known as the Mad Hatters,” Dixon said.

With Dixon and the rest of the band’s spirit, the end of the marching band season does not mean the end of marching band activity.

Samantha Baud, sophomore flute player, said, “[marching band] has literally become my family, there’s not a group of people I love more.”

The music community is created by a group of students that thrive off of passion and friendship, and it stays with them throughout the year.

“You go for the music, and stay for the friendship,” said Preveza.

Elevator malfunction still causing issues

Sophomore Jennifer Roos, who has recently been recovering from knee surgery, says that the broken elevator situation in the D-building has “made a bunch of [her] grades go down” due to spending her school days on her own in the library.

The issue with the elevators began “when the fire alarm [started], the elevator [was] supposed to shut down [but didn’t],” says Principal Dan Donovan. More specifically, there was an old smoke detector in the D-building that was not working in correspondence with the building elevator.

However, Donovan cannot stress enough that the elevators “are safe and work. They just don’t align with the fire alarms so they had to be rewired.” Until then, the elevator continues to be “out-of-service.” The C-wing elevator had the same issue, but was fixed quickly.

Students requiring elevator use in the D wing have been reporting to the library rather than their regular classrooms. Though they have missed valuable class time, the expectation is that the students must receive and return all assignments.

Senior Pablo Gulart says that although he cannot get into some of his classes, he is still “getting [his] work from [his] teachers” and “emailing [his] teachers” or asking others for help.

Similarly, sophomore Austin Harrighi says that he “can seem to get [his] work done on [his] own” just fine.

On the other hand, like Roos, sophomore Samantha Santos has been struggling to understand her work outside of the classroom. Without the teacher’s assistance that she needs, Santos shares that she is getting her work “but it doesn’t help when [she doesn’t] understand all of the information.”

Not only are students struggling due to the elevator situation in D-building, but so are many staff members, including school nurses and English teachers.

English teacher Justin Hitchcock said that he has not yet received his Chromebooks due to the elevator malfunction. “[My] Khan Academy [plans] have being pushed back,” he says, reflecting the problem plaguing many other teachers. The school recently bought through a grant Chromebooks and carts for all English teachers. The elevator is needed to get the Chromecarts to the classrooms.

In addition, school nurses Meghan Gabriel, Megan Kilcourse, and Cathy Blair hope to see the elevators fixed quickly.

“If someone were to be injured in the gym, the golf cart would have to come around to the front of the building,” says Gabriel. Fortunately, no injuries thus far have called for this measure, but nevertheless, the malfunction poses a hindrance.

Donovan says that the elevators are “supposed to be finished by the end of this week.” He is not quite sure what that may entail, or if the crew working on the elevators will be finished by the time it said, but can only expect what he has been told.

Battle of the Bots: Robotics Team competes for regionals

On Saturday November 10th, the 5th annual CTEEA VEX Robotics Qualifier was held in the Danbury High School cafeteria. With energies high and robots ready, the DHS robotics team was prepared to compete.

DHS went head-to-head against alternative school competitors, such as New Canaan High School and Masuk High School, to attempt to be one of the lucky teams to qualify for regionals. The DHS Mad Hatters did not place first or second in the competition, but they did qualify another way.

Three of their robots had different components that helped them qualify for regionals. Their robot 5150D qualified for best engineering notebook. Also, their robots 5150G and 5150J qualified through their Robot Skill scores.

The DHS Robotics team is coached and directed by Erik Savoyski, who also is a Technology Education teacher at the high school. Savoyski teaches class courses such as Honors Robotics, Engineering Transportation Systems 1 and 2, and Graphic Arts.

This year, like previous years, the robotics team and its sub-teams, competed under the name of the Mad Hatters. On top of the Mad Hatters, 11 other teams competed for chance to qualify. Savoyski mentioned how he has high expectations towards the competition.

“My expectation is that every team participates in every competition,” Savoyski said. “They have to have a working robot, there’s no excuse not to have a working robot and one that can do multiple functions at this point.”

The competition was set up with two game arenas for the teams to participate in. In each game arena there were two teams, a red and a blue. Each team had tasks to accomplish with their robot before the time ran out. Whichever team won the most tasks before the time ran out, won the match.

Despite the overall positive outlook on the current season, there are some minor setbacks for the team. “There’s some new equipment that’s out there that we haven’t received yet, so we’re waiting to get that,” Savoyski said.

Jennifer Schneider, a senior team member, added, “Our main problem is that there’s new software and hardware out and only one team in Connecticut has it.”

Besides the minor set back, the Danbury Mad Hatters are eager for what looks to be a good season.

“We’re doing good,” Schneider said. “Our expectations are to have all six teams qualify and go to world championships in April.” Junior Theodore Cote agreed, saying, “I honestly think it’s looking pretty strong.”

The Mad Hatters are working hard toward their goal of making it to the world championships in April. Due to the hard work and dedication of Savoyski and the team members, this team has shown great progress and a bright future ahead of them.

“I’m forever hopeful that we are going to be okay again this year,” Savoyski said.
